The formations
Long before we lead anyone, we are being led: by what we love, who we imitate, and the powers that quietly misshape our desire. When a leader slows down long enough to see what has been shaping them and loosens the need to control, they are re-formed by the self-emptying love of Jesus into a life worth imitating.
In a world of domineering leadership and the CEO pastor, shared leadership offers another way. We were never meant to lead alone, but alongside friends who become mirrors and windows to us. Each of us carries all five of the intelligences Paul names in Ephesians 4 (apostolic, prophetic, evangelistic, pastoral, and teaching), stacked in an order all our own and still growing, so we lead alongside others whose stack differs from ours. In this way Jesus remains the senior pastor, and together, by the Spirit, we lead with fuller wisdom.
Deep community does not happen by chance; it is cultivated, space by space, meeting our longing for belonging. Relational architecture works through four spaces, the intimate, personal, social, and public, each bringing its own strength as we move from unknown to known and from community to communities on mission. When these spaces are tended well, structure serves the formation of missional disciples and movements.
People are leaving inherited forms of church in droves, and it is worth asking why before we reach for a Band-Aid where surgery is needed. Beneath the leaving is a hunger for purpose, justice, belonging, healing, truth, and beauty, and there is real freedom in being the church rather than going to one. Innovation cannot be programmed, but it can be kindled, as we stay at the edge and pay attention to what the Spirit is already surfacing.
Leaders create culture, while managers work within it. More than any vision or plan, the unseen culture of a church forms her capacity to grow, mature, and live missionally. Culture is like gravity, rarely named yet always at work, pulling people toward their base instincts or toward their sacred potential. We create culture, and culture re-creates us, so to form a missional people is to tend the elements that give a congregation its character, until the whole body comes alive, joining God for the good of our neighborhoods and the renewal of all things.
The good news is not a private transaction but a public announcement, and it reaches into the whole of the public square. Because Christ alone is Lord, no nation, party, or ideology gets the final word, and the church lives as an alternative to a public life bent by fear and falsehood, split by contempt, and driven by the lust for domination. To be faithful witnesses, we name, unmask, and engage the powers, meeting them not with domination but with the cruciform way of Jesus, where justice becomes love made public. Personal transformation becomes social transformation, and each keeps deepening the other, until the God of peace crushes Satan under our feet and makes all things new.
